85 of 96 rave or dance event attendees in the Baltimore-Washington DC area reported lifetime use of ecstasy. People under 18 were excluded from the sample, so all respondents were 18 or older, with 76% between the ages of 18 and 21. Respondents were mostly male, white, and had generally attained at least 12 years of education. 73 stated they were current users, and 12 reported being past users. 11 of 96 reported never having used ecstasy. Salivary samples were analyzed for the presence of MDMA via an unspecified method in a laboratory, and 20% (approx. 19 of 96) had positive results. Most ecstasy users were also polydrug users, and current ecstasy users also appear to use more drugs than past ecstasy users (not examined via formal analysis). The authors note that the percentage of people reporting ecstasy use in this sample of dance event attendees is greater than the extent of use reported either by juvenile offenders sampled from the same locale, or by college students (as surveyed in the Monitoring the Future survey).
