This is a very short overview of ecstasy, its effects and risks that is aimed apparently at mental health professionals, psychiatrists and perhaps parents. The review identifies ecstasy as a synthetic "club drug" and discusses its subjective effects, adverse effects and also the subjective effects and adverse effects of herbal ecstasy. The report focuses on the risks of ingesting adulterated or fake pills, but also describes hyperthermia and cardiovascular risks associated with ecstasy use. The authors do not back up claims concerning the nature of ecstasy dependence with any research findings, and assertions that regular use can lead to clinical depression and "serious" problems with memory are inaccurate and overstated. The piece ends with advice for parents on strategies to prevent drug use in adolescents.
