Neurons to Nirvana: The Great Medicines (Documentary DVD)

a film by Oliver Hockenhull

About the Film:

Neurons to Nirvana: The Great Medicines is a richly illustrated feature documentary about the resurgence of psychedelics as medicine. Through interviews with the world’s foremost researchers, writers, psychologists and pioneers in psychedelic psychotherapy, the film explores the history of five powerful psychedelic substances (LSD, Psilocybin, MDMA, Ayahuasca and Cannabis) and their previously established medicinal potential.

Strictly focusing on the science and medicinal properties of these drugs. The filmmakers understand that this film touches on controversial territory but are committed in their belief in the message. Giancarlo Canavesio (Founder/President) of Mangusta Productions states:”This is an extremely important film. We understand that it challenges the standard perception of the war on drugs but our aim is simple, to help alleviate human suffering.”

For the first time in two generations, the use of these drugs is not being presented as harmful or as self-indulgent, but as a rational and valuable addition to therapeutic practice.

Several well-respected researchers are conducting clinical trials to treat a range of afflictions: PTSD, addictions and the psychological stresses suffered by late-stage terminal cancer patients. The initial results of all these studies are remarkable.

Reviews:

“Fuses science, art & spirituality into a seamless whole” — G. Olson, Vancouver Courier

“Wow! Wow! Wow! Wonderful! A message of light in the twilight of our time.” — Adam Milan

About the Filmmaker:

Oliver has been an enthusiastic and respectful student of Traditional Medicines for decades and is intrigued about how proper use of plant entheogens and other rare neurotransmitters can be beneficently integrated within the Western social, spiritual, medical and intellectual framework — and how they can be used to relieve suffering and to help further understanding, giving utility to the complexities of Consciousness.

His many films and media installations have shown at such film festivals and venues as — The International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam (Official Competition – Film), The Museum of Modern Art — NYC, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Sao Paulo International Film Festival, The Melbourne International Film Festival, MIT/Boston, The Contemporary Cultural Centre of Barcelona, The Vancouver International Film Festival (Competition), The San Francisco Cinematheque, The International New Media Festival, Seoul, The Chicago International Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Arte Experimental, Bilbao, Spain, etc. Works have been broadcasted on Canadian and European television.

His works are iconoclastic, visionary journeys enlivened by an intimate, poetic, and enlightening perspective. Using the full potentiality of film to engage attention, he has concentrated on pivotal subjects; the social and intellectual import of the eminent writer, Aldous Huxley; an experimental film essay on evolution featuring Richard Dawkins (and the gorillas of the London Zoo); an essay on architecture extending from the early works of Mies van der Rohe to the steps of the Burning Ghats of Varanasi; a hyper media installation that questions “chance” — as quantum indeterminate noise — to edit video — and most recently (2013/2014) a double versioned feature documentary on psychedelics.
