Researchers in the US have announced they’ll embark in a new multinational study to find out whether a psychoactive drug commonly known as ecstasy, or MDMA, can be used to treat psychiatric disorders.

Scientists say they have already run two small trials of MDMA assisted-therapy for post traumatic stress disorder, which could pave the way for the drug to be approved for prescription by 2021.

Here in Australia, Doctor Gillinder Bedi is head of Substance Use Research at Orgyen, the National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health.

She’s just published a paper titled, “Is Psychiatry Ready for MDMA?”
