On Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 7:00 PM, leading scientists and educators will host “Exploring Psychedelic Medicines,” an open conversation about new and ongoing research into the benefits and risks of psychedelics in an evening lecture and reception at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC. The event is presented by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) Canada and co-sponsored the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition.

Psychedelic research has experienced an international renaissance as the number of government approved clinical trials has increased dramatically. Substances including as MDMA, ayahuasca, LSD, psilocybin, and ibogaine are now being explored for their potential to reduce the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, calm end-of-life anxiety, and help end addiction to alcohol, opiates, and other drugs.

Topics will include: the results of the first North American observational study of the safety and long-term effectiveness of ayahuasca treatment for addiction and dependence, which was conducted in British Columbia; an ongoing Vancouver study of MDMA combined with psychotherapy to treat PTSD, approved by Health Canada in November 2013; and the international resurgence of interest in the therapeutic applications of psychedelic compounds.

Presenters will include:

  • Gabor Maté, MD, addiction researcher and author of four bestselling books, including In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction
  • Rick Doblin, PhD, founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS)
  • Mark Haden, harm reduction educator and chair of the MAPS Canada Board of Directors
  • Ingrid Pacey, MD, Vancouver psychiatrist and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD researcher
  • Philippe Lucas, ayahuasca and addiction researcher, and Board member of MAPS Canada and the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition

The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a non-profit research and educational organization. Studies to develop MDMA-assisted psychotherapy into a prescription treatment for PTSD are currently underway in Canada, Israel, and the US. MAPS Canada, a Canadian corporation, is an affiliate of MAPS, and is currently applying for charity status. For more information, visit maps.org and mapscanada.org.
