Technology Networks: MDMA for Traumatic Brain Injury To Be Studied in $1.5 Million Partnership

Summary: MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MAPS PBC) Chief Executive Officer Amy Emerson explains that “there are similarities between what is happening in the brain with TBI and PTSD,” providing context about MAPS’ recent decision to explore the viability of a collaboration with Wesana Health to accelerate research into MDMA-assisted therapy for traumatic brain injury (TBI).

“All of this is still investigational and unapproved, and we’re still figuring it out, but the mechanistic action that we see is this idea that MDMA can reopen the critical periods in the brain,” Emerson states, “and that is what’s associated with the increased plasticity and changes in social reward learning.”
