Creative and Receptive Integration Practices

According to the Synthesized Model of Integration proposed by Bathje, Majeski, & Kudowor, 2022, integration can be understood as taking place across 6 continuums. Acknowledging these continuums and seeing past the paradox can help you approach integration holistically.

The Creative-Receptive continuum reminds us that during and after psychedelic experiences we may “receive” new insights, understandings, emotions, and more. But we may also choose to create meaning, art, connection, and so much more. This continuum often applies to integration in the domains of Relationships and Spirit, but can cross into other domains as well.

When considering integration across this continuum, it is important to remember to be deliberate and careful with “received” messages. For example, Ayahuasca will not “tell” you to quit your job. It is important not to take things literally or to act from a place of disequilibrium. Rather, act from intention and attention and make important decisions after a period of integration.

In her talk at PS2023, “Psychedelics and Raising Families”, Lauren Taus spoke beautifully on the relationship to integration and “being intact” as we live life. “Integration is a practice. It’s a daily practice, and I invite you to be in it. I’ve learned to really live and live in an integrous way. I’m learning to have fun…drugs have also taught me to have fun.” This continuum also invites us to playfulness and joy. We may find ourselves listening to music more deeply or writing a new song ourselves. We may build new connections. We may work to be more open to the love and gratitude of others. Sensuality, joy, aesthetics, emotions, pleasure…these can all be wonderful parts of integrated experience.

If you are looking for some ideas for how to get started with creative and receptive integration activities, we have a few ideas for you:

  1. If you engaged in any form of creative expression during or after the psychedelic experience, reflect on the symbolism and meaning behind your creations. How can you continue to express yourself creatively in your daily life?
  2. Scribble Drawing activity
  3. Blind Contour Drawing Activity
  4. Mind-Body-Spirit Alignment: Explore practices that align the mind, body, and spirit. How can you create harmony and balance between these aspects of yourself in your daily life?
  5. Community Involvement: Consider ways to contribute positively to your community. How can you share your skills, insights, or newfound perspectives to benefit others?
